What Is ColoradoScape?

ColoradoScape is Colorado’s version of water-wise landscaping: a planted, living yard that uses native and low-water plants, efficient drip irrigation, and the right mix of mulch, rock, and boulders. The goal is a yard that looks intentional and high-end — not a bare rock field.

We design front and back yards that reduce water use, cut mowing and trimming, and still feel like a real landscape. Some homeowners also choose a hybrid approach that incorporates a small artificial turf area with planted beds, steppers, and sitting zones, but the heart of ColoradoScape is still a living, water-wise landscape.

If your main goal is rebate eligibility, review our Colorado rebate guide before starting demo so you can verify current rules for your city.

What you can expect from an FRSR ColoradoScape

  • Water-wise planting designed for sun, wind, hail and freeze-thaw.
  • Spray-to-drip conversions with proper filtration and regulation.
  • Clean edging lines, boulder accents, and materials that match your home.
  • A plan you can maintain without constant mowing and watering.

Ideal for:

Front-yard curb appeal upgrades, lawn replacement, HOA-approved modern yards, and homeowners who want a clean look with less upkeep.

Lawn replacement Low maintenance Rebate-ready HOA-friendly Modern curb appeal

Why Homeowners Choose ColoradoScape Over Traditional Lawn

  • Use less water: drip irrigation and appropriate plants use a fraction of a bluegrass lawn’s water.
  • Less maintenance: no weekly mowing; seasonal cut-backs and simple weeding instead of constant upkeep.
  • Better curb appeal: layered plants, boulders and textures give your home a custom, finished look.
  • Rebate potential: many Front Range programs reward turf removal and water-wise conversions when done correctly.
  • Colorado-friendly: palettes are selected to handle sun, wind, hail and freeze-thaw conditions.
  • HOA-friendly: we design to neighborhood guidelines so your yard looks intentional, not “zero-maintenance gravel.”

The goal isn’t a rock lot. It’s a layered landscape with structure, texture and seasonal color—without weekly mowing.

ColoradoScape vs. Xeriscape vs. “Rock Landscaping”

What we build
ColoradoScape (FRSR approach)
A living, layered landscape designed for Colorado: water-wise plants, efficient drip irrigation, clean edges, and a balanced use of mulch, rock and boulders for a finished look.
Broad term
Xeriscape
Xeriscape typically means low-water landscaping, but it can range from plant-forward designs to mostly hardscape. This page is our main ColoradoScape and xeriscape service page, focused on the version that looks great and stays healthy long-term.
Common mistake
Rock-only yards
Rock-only yards often run hot in summer, look unfinished, and can miss rebate requirements. Most homeowners want a clean, modern yard that still has structure and color.

If you want a small green area for pets or kids without the water bill, a hybrid approach is often the best answer: a limited artificial turf installation area paired with ColoradoScape planting, steppers and clean borders.

FRSR Timeline: Nearly 30 Years Building Water-Wise Colorado Landscapes

Colorado yards have changed — water costs, restrictions and expectations for clean, modern curb appeal are all higher than ever. This is how FRSR evolved to deliver rebate-ready ColoradoScape designs that look finished in every season.

1994 · Local roots
Founded as Front Range Sprinkler Repair, we built our reputation solving real Colorado irrigation and drainage problems — the foundation of every successful water-wise landscape.
2000s · Design-build landscapes
Expanded into full landscape construction: grading, planting, boulders, edging and hardscape — cohesive outdoor spaces instead of piecemeal fixes.
2010s · Water-wise direction
As drought pressure increased, we refined plant palettes and drip conversions to create true water-wise yards: living, layered landscapes — not rock-only gravel lots.
Today · ColoradoScape, rebate-ready
Designed to align with HOA requirements and city or water-district programs: turf removal, drip irrigation, live plant coverage, and documentation support for strong submittals when required.
Modern hybrids
Many homeowners want a small green play or pet area without the water bill. We can blend ColoradoScape planting with a dedicated artificial turf installation area, steppers and clean borders.
Built for Colorado conditions
Sun, wind, hail and freeze-thaw are real. We prioritize drainage, proper material depth, and efficient irrigation so your yard performs long-term.

Plant Palettes & Materials We Recommend

We tailor your palette to sun, shade, soil, HOA rules and your maintenance preferences. Below are examples of plant groupings and materials we commonly use in ColoradoScape projects.

Full sun • hot • windy
Low-water, high-performance palette
Ornamental grasses, hardy perennials, and structure plants that handle heat and exposure: Little Bluestem, Blue Oat Grass, Karl Foerster, Switchgrass, Salvia, Penstemon, Blanket Flower, Catmint, Hummingbird Mint, Russian Sage, Rabbitbrush, Potentilla.
Great for: south and west exposures, corner lots, open front yards.
Part shade • north exposure
Softer color + texture palette
Shade-tolerant shrubs and perennials paired with clean mulch beds and accent stone: Serviceberry, Spirea, low-growing Sedums, Creeping Thyme in sun pockets, and mixed foundation plantings designed for lower sun and snow load areas.
Great for: north-facing fronts, shaded side yards, protected courtyards.
Materials that finish the look
Rock, mulch, boulders & edging
Shredded mulch, river rock, cobble, breeze, decorative gravel, locally sourced stone, plus steel edging, paver borders, specimen boulders, and natural steppers where appropriate.
Goal: clean lines and a layered landscape that looks intentional.
  • Grasses: Little Bluestem, Blue Oat Grass, Karl Foerster, Switchgrass
  • Perennials: Salvia, Penstemon, Blanket Flower, Russian Sage, Catmint, Hummingbird Mint
  • Groundcovers: Creeping Thyme, Ice Plant, Creeping Phlox, low-growing Sedums
  • Shrubs: Apache Plume, Rabbitbrush, Potentilla, Spirea, Native Sumac
  • Trees: Serviceberry, Honeylocust, Bur Oak, Chanticleer Pear, ornamental Crabapples
  • Front yard idea: remove center lawn, add curving beds, specimen tree, boulder groupings and a clean walk or steppers.
  • Backyard hybrid: keep a small artificial turf area, then transition to ColoradoScape beds and a dining patio.
  • Side yard solutions: convert muddy side yards into rock or mulch plus plant pockets and steppers.
  • Corner lots: layered plantings and boulders to frame the home and reduce exposed, hard-to-water turf.

Popular Add-Ons With ColoradoScape Projects

Want the cleanest Colorado modern look? Pair ColoradoScape beds with a defined hard edge: steel edging, a paver border, or a stamped concrete walkway upgrade.

Rebates & HOA Support

Many Front Range cities and water providers offer turf-replacement or water-wise landscape rebates when projects are designed correctly. Most programs require pre-approval, minimum square footage, and a percentage of live plants with efficient irrigation. Rock-only yards often do not qualify.

Rebate rules vary by city and by year. Some programs exclude certain materials, including in some areas artificial turf. We’ll confirm what applies to your address and help you assemble the information many programs require: photos, plant lists, and area notes.

HOA submittals made simple
We can provide drawings, plant lists, and photos so your submittal is clear, professional, and easy to approve.
Rebate-ready documentation support
We’ll help you capture the basics many programs ask for: before and after photos, square footage notes, irrigation approach, and plant coverage.
Designed to meet requirements
We build living landscapes with plant coverage and efficient irrigation so your project aligns with typical water-wise criteria.

ColoradoScape FAQ

Is ColoradoScape just rocks and a few shrubs?
No. True ColoradoScape uses a designed mix of live, water-wise plants, drip irrigation, and strategic rock or mulch areas. We focus on structure, color and texture so your yard feels finished — not like a construction site covered in gravel.
Will a rock-only yard qualify for rebates?
Usually no. Many programs require a minimum percentage of live plants and efficient irrigation to approve rebates. We’ll confirm requirements for your city and design your project so it has the best chance of qualifying.
Can I include artificial turf with ColoradoScape?
Yes. Many clients choose a hybrid approach: a small artificial turf play or pet area surrounded by ColoradoScape beds. Rebate rules vary by city and by year, so we balance everything to meet the local requirements where applicable.
Where can I find current Colorado lawn replacement and rebate links?
Start with our Colorado xeriscape rebates page. It pulls together current city and utility links for water-wise landscape and lawn replacement programs across much of the Front Range.
How long does a typical project take?
Front-yard refreshes are often around one week once work starts. Full front and back yard ColoradoScape projects generally run 2–4 weeks depending on demo, boulders, irrigation changes, inspections, and access.
Do you help with HOA approvals?
Yes. We regularly work with HOAs across the Front Range. We can provide drawings, plant lists and photos so your submittal is clear and professional.
What maintenance should I expect after installation?
Expect seasonal cut-backs, occasional weeding, and smart watering adjustments as plants establish. We provide a simple care guide and recommended controller settings so you know what to do season by season.
