What Is ColoradoScape?
ColoradoScape is FRSR’s clean, modern approach to xeriscaping in Denver and across the Front Range. It is a planted, living landscape that uses native and low-water plants, efficient drip irrigation, and the right mix of mulch, rock and boulders.
The goal is simple: a yard that uses less water, needs less maintenance, handles Colorado weather and still looks high-end. ColoradoScape is not a bare gravel yard. It is a designed outdoor space with structure, texture, seasonal color and long-term curb appeal.
Some homeowners choose a hybrid approach that incorporates a small artificial turf area with planted beds, steppers, sitting zones or stamped concrete walkways. The heart of ColoradoScape is still a living, water-wise landscape.
What you can expect from an FRSR ColoradoScape
- Water-wise planting designed for sun, wind, hail and freeze-thaw.
- Spray-to-drip conversions with proper filtration and pressure regulation.
- Clean edging lines, boulder accents and materials that match your home.
- Modern curb appeal without the water demand of a traditional bluegrass lawn.
Ideal for:
Front-yard curb appeal upgrades, lawn replacement, HOA-approved modern yards, and homeowners who want a clean look with less watering and less weekly maintenance.

- Less water: drip irrigation and low-water plants use far less water than a traditional bluegrass lawn.
- Less maintenance: no weekly mowing; seasonal cut-backs and simple weeding instead of constant upkeep.
- Better curb appeal: layered plants, boulders and textures give your home a finished, custom look.
- Rebate potential: many Front Range programs reward turf removal and water-wise conversions when done correctly.
- Colorado-friendly: palettes are selected to handle sun, wind, hail and freeze-thaw conditions.
- HOA-friendly: we design to neighborhood guidelines so your yard looks intentional, not like zero-maintenance gravel.

ColoradoScape vs. Xeriscape vs. Rock Landscaping
If you want a small green area for pets or kids without the water bill, a hybrid approach is often the best answer: a limited artificial turf installation area paired with ColoradoScape planting, steppers and clean borders.
Nearly 30 Years Building Water-Wise Colorado Landscapes
Colorado yards have changed. Water costs, restrictions and expectations for clean, modern curb appeal are higher than ever. This is how FRSR evolved to deliver ColoradoScape designs that look finished in every season.
Plant Palettes & Materials We Recommend
We tailor your palette to sun, shade, soil, HOA rules and your maintenance preferences. Below are examples of plant groupings and materials we commonly use in ColoradoScape projects.
- Grasses: Little Bluestem, Blue Oat Grass, Karl Foerster, Switchgrass
- Perennials: Salvia, Penstemon, Blanket Flower, Russian Sage, Catmint, Hummingbird Mint
- Groundcovers: Creeping Thyme, Ice Plant, Creeping Phlox, low-growing Sedums
- Shrubs: Apache Plume, Rabbitbrush, Potentilla, Spirea, Native Sumac
- Trees: Serviceberry, Honeylocust, Bur Oak, Chanticleer Pear, ornamental Crabapples
- Front yard idea: remove center lawn, add curving beds, specimen tree, boulder groupings and a clean walk or steppers.
- Backyard hybrid: keep a small artificial turf area, then transition to ColoradoScape beds and a dining patio.
- Side yard solution: convert muddy side yards into rock or mulch with plant pockets and steppers.
- Corner lot strategy: layered plantings and boulders to frame the home and reduce exposed, hard-to-water turf.

Popular Add-Ons With ColoradoScape Projects
Want the cleanest Colorado modern look? Pair ColoradoScape beds with a defined hard edge: steel edging, a paver border, or a stamped concrete walkway upgrade.
Rebates & HOA Support
Many Front Range cities and water providers offer turf-replacement or water-wise landscape rebates when projects are designed correctly. Most programs require pre-approval, minimum square footage, and a percentage of live plants with efficient irrigation. Rock-only yards often do not qualify.
Rebate rules vary by city and by year. Some programs exclude certain materials, including artificial turf in some areas. We’ll confirm what applies to your address and help you assemble the information many programs require: photos, plant lists and area notes.
