Courtman Project – Denver, CO Concrete Patio & Custom Fire Feature

A modern Denver backyard project featuring a new concrete patio, custom rectangular gas fire feature, built-in bench seating, raised planter, decorative rock, and a clean contemporary layout designed for a smaller urban space.

Modern Concrete Patio, Fire Feature and Built-In Seating in Denver

The Courtman Project in Denver was designed to make the most of a compact backyard while still creating a comfortable and visually strong outdoor living area. FRSR installed a new concrete patio, custom rectangular gas fire feature, built-in bench seating, raised planter, decorative rock, and clean hardscape transitions throughout the space.

The new concrete patio creates a durable, low-maintenance surface that extends across the primary outdoor living area. The layout was carefully shaped around the home, gates, stairs, planting areas, and existing property lines so the finished space feels open and usable without wasting valuable square footage.

Control joints were incorporated into the concrete in a clean geometric pattern. These joints help manage natural movement in the slab while also adding subtle visual structure to the patio surface.

The main focal point is a custom rectangular gas fire feature finished in smooth concrete. Black lava rock fills the fire basin and provides contrast against the surrounding gray concrete while allowing the flame to remain the visual centerpiece.

The rectangular shape gives the fire feature a modern appearance and fits the narrow proportions of the backyard much better than a traditional round fire pit. Its placement creates a defined gathering area while still leaving room to move comfortably through the patio.

A custom built-in bench was installed directly behind the fire feature. The bench base was formed to match the modern concrete elements, while a wood seating surface adds warmth and makes the area more comfortable for everyday use.

The bench and fire feature work together as one coordinated outdoor living zone. This eliminates the need for excess loose furniture and helps preserve circulation in the smaller yard.

A raised concrete planter was also incorporated near the home. The planter adds height and definition to the edge of the patio while providing a dedicated space for future planting and seasonal color.

Decorative rock was installed around the hardscape, fencing, and planting zones to reduce maintenance and create crisp transitions between the concrete and surrounding areas. The darker rock near the patio also complements the lava rock used inside the fire feature.

The completed Courtman Project gives the homeowners a clean, contemporary backyard with a practical layout, permanent seating, a custom fire element, and a low-maintenance surface that can be used throughout much of the year.
