The Patterson project in Brighton brings a separate outdoor gathering area into the backyard. A freestanding wood pergola sits over a gray concrete patio, with broad natural-stone steps connecting it to the concrete area beside the home. Decorative rock, boulders and planting beds frame the route between the two spaces.

A Freestanding Wood Pergola

The pergola defines the patio without enclosing it. Its open beams and overhead slats provide filtered shade while preserving views across the lawn and beyond the property. Set away from the house, it creates a distinct place to sit, gather and enjoy the backyard.

Gray Concrete and Natural-Stone Connections

The gray concrete patio provides a clean surface beneath the pergola. Broad natural-stone steps lead through the rock landscape from the house to the patio, giving the change in elevation a clear route. A separate stone path continues beside the home through the landscape beds.

Rock, Boulders and Planting

Decorative rock surrounds the steps and path, while accent boulders add scale and texture. Mulch planting pockets, young trees and smaller plants soften the stone areas and create a transition to the surrounding lawn.

Path Lighting Along the Route

Path lights are placed alongside the steps and stone path. They mark the connections between the house, landscape and pergola patio, adding a useful finishing detail for evening use.
