The Thomas Project in Erie transformed a compact backyard into a clean, welcoming, and highly usable outdoor living space. The completed design combines a large paver patio, custom steps, new sod, mulch planting beds, evergreen trees, ornamental grasses, and a wood-and-wire fence into one coordinated backyard.

The project was designed around the home’s rear entry, existing utility areas, property boundaries, and the need for both hardscape and green space. Rather than filling the entire yard with one material, the layout creates a balanced mix of patio, lawn, planting beds, and open circulation.

The finished space gives the homeowners a practical patio for furniture and entertaining while preserving enough lawn and planting area to keep the backyard comfortable and visually inviting.

Large Paver Patio

A large paver patio was installed directly behind the home to create the main outdoor living area. The patio provides generous space for dining furniture, grilling, seating, and everyday backyard use.

The pavers feature a blended mix of warm tan, brown, gray, and muted earth tones that complement the gray exterior of the home, natural wood fence, dark mulch, and surrounding plant material.

Multiple paver sizes were incorporated throughout the field to create a varied pattern with more visual interest than a basic running bond or single-size layout. The pattern gives the patio a refined appearance while maintaining the durability and flexibility of an interlocking paver system.

The patio extends across the rear of the house and provides access to both the main sliding door and the nearby service door. This creates a functional outdoor surface that serves several entry points without leaving narrow or disconnected walkways.

Curved Patio Edge and Finished Border

The outer edge of the patio was shaped with a broad curve to create a softer transition into the lawn. This curved design helps the hardscape fit naturally within the smaller backyard and avoids the rigid appearance of a basic rectangular slab.

A defined soldier-course style border was installed around the patio perimeter. The border frames the main paver field, strengthens the visual edge, and gives the entire patio a polished, intentional finish.

The curved edge also creates more room for sod and planting areas while preserving a generous amount of usable patio space. This allows the yard to feel open without sacrificing the outdoor living area.

Raised Patio Construction

The patio sits above portions of the surrounding lawn grade, requiring a raised base and carefully constructed outer edge. This creates a level and stable patio surface while managing the elevation difference around the home.

The exposed side of the raised patio was finished cleanly so the transition into the sod feels complete. The elevated construction also helps create a comfortable relationship between the patio surface and the home’s exterior doors.

Proper base preparation and compaction are essential for raised paver installations. A well-built foundation helps maintain surface stability, supports the edge restraint, and reduces the chance of settling or movement over time.

Custom Curved Paver Steps

Custom paver steps were constructed beneath the rear sliding door to create a comfortable transition from the home to the patio. The steps use the same paver materials and colors as the main patio, allowing them to feel fully integrated into the overall hardscape.

The broad, curved shape of the steps creates a more welcoming entry than a narrow straight staircase. Rounded corners soften the appearance and give the rear entrance a stronger architectural presence.

Each level includes a paver cap and finished riser, producing a layered design that coordinates with the patio border. The wider lower step opens naturally into the patio and provides plenty of room for comfortable movement.

A second set of paver steps provides access to the nearby raised utility area. Matching materials help connect the smaller landing to the main patio while keeping the design consistent across the rear of the home.

New Sod and Usable Lawn Space

New sod was installed around the patio to create a soft green transition between the hardscape and planting beds. The lawn wraps around the curved edge of the patio and provides a practical open area for recreation, pets, and everyday backyard use.

The sod was shaped to follow the patio and fence lines, creating a clean and efficient lawn layout. This avoids narrow strips of grass that would be difficult to maintain and keeps the usable lawn concentrated in the most practical portion of the yard.

The green lawn also helps balance the amount of paver surface and creates strong contrast against the warm patio colors and dark mulch beds.

Mulch Planting Beds

Mulch planting beds were installed along the fence and around the rear corner of the property. These beds provide separation between the lawn and fence while giving the landscape room for trees, ornamental grasses, and future plant growth.

Dark wood mulch creates a clean background for the plant material and complements the natural wood tones of the fence. It also helps retain soil moisture, reduce exposed soil, and provide a more finished appearance around the plants.

The bed nearest the rear entrance includes a mix of upright evergreen material and lower ornamental grasses. This layered planting creates height and texture without overcrowding the smaller yard.

Evergreen Trees and Ornamental Grasses

Columnar evergreen trees were positioned along the outer edge of the yard to provide vertical structure and long-term screening. Their narrow growth habit allows them to add height without taking up excessive lawn or patio space.

Smaller evergreen trees were added along the fence to continue the planting rhythm and create year-round color. As the trees mature, they will provide additional privacy and soften views toward the street and neighboring properties.

Ornamental grasses were planted around the taller evergreens to create a lower layer of texture and movement. Their soft foliage contrasts with the upright evergreen forms and helps connect the planting beds to the surrounding lawn.

Wood-and-Wire Fence

A wood-and-wire fence defines the property while preserving a more open appearance than a fully enclosed privacy fence. The horizontal wood rails and substantial posts give the yard a warm, natural backdrop.

The wire infill maintains visibility and airflow while helping contain the backyard. This style works especially well within the neighborhood setting because it provides separation without making the compact space feel closed in.

The fence also provides a strong backdrop for the evergreen trees, grasses, mulch beds, and lawn. As the landscape matures, the plant material will soften the fence and increase privacy throughout the backyard.

Designed Around Existing Utilities

The patio and landscaping were carefully designed around several existing utility connections, including downspouts, mechanical equipment, exterior pipes, vents, electrical components, and raised service areas.

Maintaining proper access to these elements was an important part of the project. The patio and planting beds were shaped around the utility zones rather than covering or blocking them.

This type of site coordination allows the finished landscape to look clean while preserving access for future maintenance and protecting the function of the home’s exterior systems.
