Complete Parker Outdoor Living Space with a Covered Patio

The Schultz Project in Parker transformed a large backyard into a connected outdoor living environment designed for dining, grilling, entertaining, relaxing around the fire, and moving comfortably between the home and landscape.

This project combines a custom timber roof cover, extensive stamped concrete, masonry walls, a built-in fire feature, outdoor cooking space, concrete walkways and steps, lawn areas, decorative rock, trees, and landscape lighting. Each element was coordinated to create one finished backyard instead of a collection of separate improvements.

The finished design provides several distinct gathering areas while maintaining an open flow throughout the property. The covered patio creates a comfortable central destination, the fire feature establishes a second gathering area, and the walkways connect everything back to the house.

Custom Timber Roof Cover

A large custom wood roof cover serves as the centerpiece of the Schultz Project. The open timber structure provides shade and protection while preserving expansive views across the backyard.

Heavy wood posts, exposed beams, decorative truss details, and a wood-plank ceiling give the structure a substantial architectural appearance. The natural wood complements the warm earth tones used in the stamped concrete, masonry walls, decorative rock, and surrounding landscape.

Recessed lighting was incorporated into the ceiling so the covered patio can remain comfortable and usable after sunset. Decorative metal hardware at the beam connections adds definition and reinforces the craftsmanship of the timber structure.

The roof cover provides enough room for a full outdoor dining arrangement, grilling area, and additional furnishings without making the space feel crowded. Its placement creates a comfortable transition between the open patio, fire feature, lawn, and surrounding landscape.

Expansive Stamped Concrete Patio

A large stamped concrete patio was installed beneath and around the roof cover to create a durable foundation for the outdoor living space.

The concrete was finished with a natural stone-style stamped pattern and warm blended coloring. Darker accents within the textured joints help define the irregular stone shapes and add dimension across the patio surface.

The stamped finish carries through both the covered and open portions of the patio, allowing the entire hardscape to read as one continuous installation. This consistency helps connect the dining area, grilling space, fire feature, seat walls, and surrounding walkways.

Rounded corners and softly curved patio edges were incorporated where the concrete meets the lawn and decorative rock. These shapes help the larger patio blend more naturally into the surrounding landscape.

Raised Patio Construction and Finished Edges

Portions of the patio were constructed above the surrounding grade to create a level and comfortable outdoor living surface. The exposed concrete edges were formed and finished so the raised patio looks complete from every direction.

The vertical concrete faces were colored and textured to coordinate with the upper stamped surface. This prevents the elevated sections from appearing unfinished and gives the patio a more substantial architectural presence within the landscape.

The raised construction also helps manage the elevation differences between the home, covered patio, lawn, and surrounding rock areas. Broad transitions were used throughout the project to make the different levels feel connected.

Rectangular Masonry Fire Feature

A custom rectangular fire feature creates a strong focal point near the open portion of the stamped concrete patio. Its elongated shape provides a contemporary alternative to a traditional circular fire pit and allows several people to gather around it comfortably.

The base was finished with a stone-style masonry veneer that coordinates with the other walls and columns throughout the project. A wide, light-colored cap creates a clean upper edge and provides contrast against the darker masonry below.

Dark decorative fire rock completes the center of the feature. The fire element is positioned so it can be enjoyed from the surrounding patio, seat wall, covered dining area, and nearby lawn.

By building the fire feature directly into the hardscape design, it feels permanent and intentional rather than added after the patio was completed.

Custom Seat Walls and Masonry Details

Stone seat walls were incorporated around the patio to define the outdoor rooms and provide additional seating without filling the space with more furniture.

The masonry walls use the same natural stone-style veneer as the fire feature and outdoor cooking area. Light-colored caps tie the different features together and create a comfortable finished edge along the tops of the walls.

One wall helps separate the fire feature from the surrounding landscape while another defines the edge of the covered patio. Their placement creates structure without blocking views or making the backyard feel enclosed.

The seat walls also provide strong visual transitions between the raised stamped concrete and the lower decorative rock areas surrounding the patio.

Covered Outdoor Cooking and Dining Area

The covered patio was arranged to support both outdoor dining and cooking. A masonry cooking area was integrated beneath the roof so grilling can take place close to the dining table while remaining protected from direct sun.

The stone finishes used around the cooking space coordinate with the fire feature, columns, and seat walls. This consistency creates a polished outdoor room and helps the cooking area feel like a permanent part of the project.

The open-sided structure allows smoke and heat to move freely while keeping the outdoor kitchen connected to the remainder of the backyard. There is ample room for dining furniture, circulation, and serving guests beneath the cover.

Curved Stamped Concrete Walkway

A wide curved stamped concrete walkway connects the outdoor living area to the rear entrance of the home. The path moves through the decorative rock landscape and provides a clean, dependable route between the house and patio.

The walkway uses the same natural stone-style pattern and coloring as the main patio, maintaining a consistent hardscape appearance across the property.

Its flowing shape works with the curved lawn edges and rock beds instead of cutting through the landscape in a rigid straight line. The wider lower section creates a welcoming approach as the walkway reaches the patio.

Custom Concrete Steps and Integrated Lighting

A series of stamped concrete steps was constructed to manage the elevation change between the home and backyard. The steps follow the direction of the walkway and create a gradual route up to the rear entrance.

Each step was formed with broad treads and finished vertical faces that match the surrounding stamped concrete. The varying alignment follows the natural movement of the walkway and avoids the appearance of a narrow, basic staircase.

Low-voltage step lights were installed within the risers to improve nighttime visibility and highlight the path after dark. Additional lighting was incorporated around the outdoor living area to make the patio safer and more inviting in the evening.

Sod, Decorative Rock and Landscape Beds

Lawn areas were incorporated around the stamped concrete to soften the extensive hardscape and provide open green space within the backyard.

The sod was shaped with curved edges that follow the walkways, patio, and surrounding rock beds. This creates a more natural layout and keeps the lawn concentrated in practical areas that are easier to maintain.

Decorative rock was installed throughout the remaining landscape areas, including around the home, pathways, patio, trees, and property edges. The rock provides a durable, lower-maintenance surface and creates a clean contrast against the green lawn and warm concrete.

Defined edging keeps the sod and decorative rock separated while preserving the curved lines of the overall design.

Boulders, Trees and Colorado Landscape Character

Large natural boulders were incorporated near the walkway and masonry features to add texture and help the constructed elements blend into the surrounding Colorado landscape.

Trees and evergreen plant material were positioned around the patio and property edges to provide long-term height, structure, screening, and seasonal interest.

The planting layout leaves the main outdoor living space open while placing taller landscape elements around the perimeter. As the trees mature, they will provide additional shade and privacy without crowding the patio.

One Complete Parker Backyard

The Schultz Project demonstrates the advantage of designing the roof cover, stamped concrete, fire feature, outdoor cooking space, masonry walls, steps, walkways, lighting, lawn, decorative rock, boulders, and planting as one complete project.

Every portion of the backyard serves a purpose. The covered patio provides shade and dining space, the outdoor kitchen supports entertaining, the fire feature creates a gathering point, the seat walls add structure and seating, and the walkways connect the outdoor living area back to the home.
