Complete Firestone Backyard with Stamped Concrete and New Landscaping

The Cooper Project in Firestone transformed an unfinished backyard into a clean, comfortable, and highly usable outdoor living space. The finished landscape combines a large stamped concrete patio, curved walkways, a generous lawn, mulch beds, decorative rock, trees, and defined landscape edges into one coordinated backyard design.

Rather than treating the patio, lawn, and landscape beds as separate additions, FRSR designed the property so each area connects naturally to the next. The curved concrete layout provides comfortable movement around the home while the lawn and planting areas soften the hardscape and give the yard a finished appearance.

Large Stamped Concrete Patio

A spacious stamped concrete patio was installed directly behind the home to create a durable area for outdoor furniture, dining, grilling, entertaining, and everyday backyard use.

The patio was shaped with a broad curved outer edge instead of a basic rectangular footprint. This allows the concrete to transition more naturally into the lawn and landscape beds while giving the homeowners more usable patio space.

The concrete was finished with a natural stone-style stamped pattern and subtle gray coloring. Darker accent tones within the texture help define the individual stone shapes and add depth across the surface.

Control joints were carefully incorporated into the patio layout to help manage natural concrete movement while maintaining a clean overall appearance. The completed patio provides the strength and durability of concrete with the more decorative appearance of natural stone.

Curved Stamped Concrete Walkways

Curved stamped concrete walkways extend from the main patio and connect the backyard to the side of the home. These paths provide a dependable route between the patio, lawn, side gate, and exterior areas without requiring the homeowners to walk through mulch or rock.

The walkways use the same stamped pattern and coloring as the main patio, creating a consistent hardscape finish throughout the project. Their flowing shape also helps divide the yard into separate lawn and landscape areas without making the design feel rigid.

A branching walkway near the rear of the home provides access in multiple directions while creating a smooth transition between the patio, side yard, and surrounding beds.

New Sod and Open Lawn Area

A large area of new sod was installed through the center of the backyard, creating an open and practical lawn for recreation, pets, family activities, and general outdoor use.

The sod was shaped with curved edges that follow the surrounding stamped concrete and mulch beds. This creates a softer appearance than a basic square lawn and allows the grass to fit naturally within the overall landscape layout.

The wide lawn area balances the amount of hardscape while preserving a generous green space within the backyard. Its simple shape also makes mowing and ongoing maintenance more manageable.

Mulch Beds and Defined Landscape Edges

Mulch beds were installed around the lawn, beside the walkways, and along the rear portions of the property. These beds provide space for trees and future plant growth while reducing the amount of turf needed throughout the yard.

The dark mulch creates a strong visual contrast against the green lawn and lighter stamped concrete. It also helps retain soil moisture, moderate soil temperatures, reduce exposed soil, and create a cleaner finished appearance.

Steel edging was used to create crisp separation between the sod, mulch, and decorative rock. The flexible edging follows the curved design of the landscape while helping prevent the different materials from spreading into one another.

Decorative Rock Along the Home and Fence

Decorative rock was incorporated along the foundation, side yard, fence line, and areas where lawn would have been difficult to maintain. These rock sections provide a durable, lower-maintenance surface while improving drainage and reducing exposed soil around the home.

The light-colored rock also creates visual contrast with the darker mulch and gray stamped concrete. Its placement beside the walkways helps define the travel areas and gives the side yard a more finished appearance.

Using a combination of sod, mulch, and rock allows each material to be placed where it performs best instead of relying on one landscape material throughout the entire property.

Trees and Long-Term Backyard Structure

Trees were added within the landscape beds to provide long-term shade, height, seasonal interest, and structure. Their placement around the outer portions of the lawn keeps the center of the backyard open while allowing the landscape to become more established as the trees mature.

The trees also help soften the surrounding wood fence and neighboring homes without making the backyard feel enclosed. As the canopy develops, the yard will gain additional shade and privacy while maintaining its open layout.
