Raised Stamped Concrete Patio and Fire Pit in Castle Rock

The Leo Project in Castle Rock transformed an uneven area beside the home into a durable and usable outdoor living space. Because of the property’s elevation and the existing doors, deck, utilities, and surrounding grade, this project required more than simply pouring a flat concrete patio.

FRSR constructed a raised stamped concrete patio designed to create a level outdoor surface while fitting cleanly against the home and beneath the existing upper deck. The completed patio provides space for seating, relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying the custom fire feature.

The raised design allows the patio to meet the home at a practical elevation while creating a strong, finished transition to the decorative rock surrounding the structure. Every edge, step, corner, and vertical concrete face was incorporated into the overall design rather than treated as an afterthought.

Natural Stone-Style Stamped Concrete

The patio surface was finished with a natural stone-style stamped pattern that gives the concrete the appearance and texture of individually placed stone. The random pattern helps break up the large surface and adds visual detail without making the finished patio feel overly busy.

A warm brown integral color was used across the patio, steps, borders, and exposed vertical faces. The color coordinates with the stone veneer on the fire pit and the natural earth tones found throughout the surrounding rock landscape.

Darker detailing within the stamped joints helps define the individual stone shapes and adds depth to the finished surface. Once sealed, the patio develops a richer appearance while gaining additional protection from weather, moisture, staining, and regular outdoor use.

Raised Patio Construction and Finished Vertical Faces

One of the most important features of this project is the height of the finished patio. The existing grade dropped away from the house, requiring the concrete structure to be built above the surrounding landscape rather than directly at ground level.

The exposed sides of the patio were formed and finished to create smooth, continuous vertical faces. These finished edges give the raised patio a substantial architectural appearance and eliminate the unfinished look that can occur when the sides of elevated concrete are not properly detailed.

Rounded outside corners soften the shape of the patio and create a more natural transition into the surrounding decorative rock. The broad curved corners also reduce sharp angles and help the large raised structure feel more integrated into the backyard.

A defined border was incorporated around portions of the stamped field. This framing detail gives the patio a clean perimeter and separates the main stone-style pattern from the outer concrete edge.

Custom Concrete Steps and Patio Transitions

Integrated stamped concrete steps were constructed to connect the different elevations around the home. The steps match the color and finish of the surrounding patio, allowing the transitions to feel like part of one complete installation.

The step placement was carefully coordinated with the existing exterior staircase, lower patio area, doorway access, and raised concrete surface. This creates a practical route between the different outdoor areas without interrupting the overall patio layout.

The steps were built with broad treads and clearly defined risers, providing a comfortable transition while maintaining the same durable concrete construction used throughout the project.

Custom Masonry Fire Pit

A custom circular fire pit serves as the focal point of the raised patio. Its central location creates a natural gathering space while still leaving room around the feature for seating and movement.

The fire pit was finished with a stone-style masonry veneer that adds texture and coordinates with the home’s existing exterior stonework. The mix of gray, tan, cream, and brown tones helps the fire feature connect visually with both the house and the stamped concrete.

A light-colored segmented cap provides a clean finished edge around the top of the fire pit and creates contrast against the darker patio surface. Decorative lava rock completes the center of the fire feature and reinforces the natural material palette used throughout the project.

Rather than setting a portable fire bowl on the patio, the built-in fire pit gives the space a permanent focal point and makes the entire outdoor living area feel more intentional and complete.

Built Around the Home, Deck and Existing Utilities

The patio was designed around several existing site conditions, including the upper deck, exterior staircase, lower-level doors, windows, utility equipment, drainage pipes, electrical components, and plumbing connections.

Careful forming and placement allowed the concrete to fit closely around these elements while maintaining access where needed. Small rock-filled openings were retained around utility connections rather than permanently burying them within the concrete.

The finished patio extends beneath the elevated deck, turning an area that could otherwise have remained unused into sheltered outdoor living space. This provides additional flexibility for furniture, a hot tub, storage, and year-round backyard use.

Decorative Rock and Low-Maintenance Surroundings

Decorative rock surrounds the raised patio and provides a clean transition between the concrete structure and the rest of the yard. The rock helps reduce exposed soil and ongoing maintenance while allowing water to move through the surrounding landscape.

The warm and neutral tones within the rock complement the brown concrete, stone fire pit, and exterior colors of the home. Steel edging separates the rock from the nearby lawn, maintaining a crisp boundary between the different landscape materials.
